Injury time – A Sam Higgins shot from 20 yards goes a foot wide of the near post.
90 mins – And three minutes of injury time.
88 mins – It’s not cleared, though, and Wray is forced into a fine parry away. From that Welling earn a free kick on the edge of the area. Simon Peddie is booked for his troubles too. But Jamie Day’s free kick hits the wall. Yes!
85 mins – Another high Welling ball, and it breaks just inside the area to Louis Cumbers. He gets caught in two minds of whether to shoot or cross and eventually decides to pass to Richard Wray.
82 mins – Welling go forward, another long ball to the left, and Joe Healy’s cross sails over the bar and also the Manorway itself. Frustration mounts for the Conference South visitors.
77 mins- It’s East Thurrock United playing all the football. Sam Higgins surges forward and his shot goes just wide. From the goal kick, the Rocks retrieve the ball, continue pressurising, and it takes a desperate tackle from Welling defender Jack Parkinson to prevent a clear shot at goal from well inside the area. Another fabulous Rocks display.
71 mins – A strong, strong shout for a Rocks penalty. Kye Ruel’s impressive turn and shot inside the area clearly strikes the right hand of the Kent side’s defender. The ref somehow decides it’s accidental. Oh bother.
Attendance: A healthy 224 are watching this cracking cup tie as we go into the last 20 minutes or so of the game. Still end to end stuff but nothing clear-cut these past few minutes.
59 mins – Kris Newby booked for a foul on the edge of his own area, a decision which was seemingly influenced by the visiting supporters shouting a lot. The free kick is superbly palmed away by Richard Wray for a corner which is subsequently cleared.
56 mins – The Rocks attack down the right and the cross goes inside the six yard box. Kris Newby looked sure to get there first but Welling custodian Daniel Thomas bravely snatches it from his toes. A corker of a cup tie!
54 mins – Not to be outdone, Reiss Gilbey goes downfield and his piledriver of a shot from around 30 yards goes just wide of the Bus Stops End goal. Great stuff.
53 mins – Oh, what a save. Welling break on the right, the centre comes in from the bye-line and a shot from Joe Healey, just outside the six yard box, seemed certain to be an equaliser. Richard Wray didn’t think so, though, and somehow tipped it over the bar. Liquid football.
48 mins – Ooh, that was close. A Welling free kick on the left about 25 yards out, put inside the box, and their goalscorer Andy Pugh puts an 8 yard header wide of the near post. Should haver been the equaliser, that.
4.02pm – KICK OFF! Again. Of course
———————————
HALF TIME; And the Rocks are applauded off the field after a terrific first half. Not too much football being played, but it’s East Thurrock United playing it and they deserve to be ahead. Not going too badly elsewhere, either, although Southend and Thurrock need something. So do I so I’ll be back after a pie and Bovril.
40 mins – GOALS – EAST THURROCK UNITED 2, WELLING UNITED 1 Apologies for the delay in updates. So much going on here! End to end stuff. On the half hour the visitors equalised through ANDY PUGH with a 15 yard shot rifled into the net after a cross on the right. A couple of minutes later, another free kick for the Rocks on the edge of the area and this time SAM HIGGINS punished them with an exqusuite shot. Loick Pires then missed a sitter for Welling and took out his frustration by nailing Tom Stephens, for which he was rightly booked. Phew!

24 mins – Then from the subsequent goal kick, Andy Pugh shoots over the bar for the visitors. Warming up nicely.
23 mins – Another Rocks free kick, another punt over the bar.
21 mins – A hopeful visitors punt from said clearance, from almost the half way, bounces inches over the Rocks crossbar, with Richard Wray beaten, despite his waving to the contrary to his team mates.
20 mins – Welling break dangerously on the right through the fabulously named Tamer Tuna, which sounds more of a challenge than a name. His cross is cleared for a corner and comes to nothing.
15 mins – Nothing too much to speak of. Rocks are playing the football without threatening too much in the past few minutes. Welling are looking for the more direct approach, although you can’t call it hoofball. More like long-kicking-er-ball.
7 mins – East Thurrock surge forward again and Sam Higgins is upended on the edge of the area. It was almost last man but no cards are brandished. The free kick sails over the bar. Bah.

4 mins - GOAL! ….. EAST THURROCK UNITED 1, Welling United 0 And The Rocks respond in classic style! From the goal kick, some lovely inter-passing down the right and from just inside the area MATT HALL shoots into the far post corner of the net. Get in there!
3 mins – The visitors start as if they mean business. An Andy Pugh shot from 20 yards goes just wide of the far post
3.00pm – KICK OFF! Oh yes! The Rocks are attacking the Manorway End.

2.30pm - Good afternoon, one and all, to a very chilly Rookery Hill. Ordinarily, it would, perhaps should, be a league fixture here. But this season, logic has been turned on its head, as Essex sides have suddenly hit form in national cup competitions.
We expect our sides to be out of the FA Cup and Trophy or Vase by the end of October, yet here we are, with the Rocks involved in yet another potential cracker. After the ultimately vain heroics of their epic FA Cup match with Macclesfield, East Thurrock United take on Conference South outfit Welling United. Who knows what will happen in this crazy season?
The one thing you do know, of course, is that whatever hapeens, you’ll be the first to know about it here. By refreshing this page every few minutes, as well as tuning into to Reece, Charlie and Owen on 97.8 or here on the web, you’ll be the first to know of the cut and thrust of an enthralling afternoon, not just here but from all our local sides.
Game on!
