Neil Gits Sloppy

You may find it hard to believe after listening to last Monday’s show, but a month short of 40 years ago I went on a broadcasting course ! I spent several weeks in a studio in Southend (ironically on a Monday evening between 7 & 9 pm) along with three other budding radio DJs, polishing up any existing talent we had and learning various techniques to become professional presenters in the future.

We were taught by the late John Hayes who was well respected at both Essex Radio then later on BBC Essex and many of the things I picked up from him I still use today, though putting the wrong songs on and tripping over my tongue constantly were NOT two of them ! Whatever station I’ve appeared on since Jnauary 1986, whether it was an RSR broadcast, commercial radio, a community set-up like Gateway or even my brief spells dabbling in ‘naughty radio’ many years ago, there are ‘rules’ that I stick to rigidly which hopefully make listening to my shows easy on the ear – along with some great music from the soul era of the 70s & 80s !

One thing I was able to do in my years on air at Essex Radio was to record all of my ‘links’ between the songs. We had an incredible engineering team there and they set up a cassette machine that would start recording each time you opened the microphone ! That way I could play it back after being on air (sometimes in the car on the way home!) and hear just how well / badly I’d done, ready to improve next time out. I’ve tried to do that regularly ever since, when technically possible, and here in 2025 we have something called the ‘internet’ which allows you to go on a ‘website’ and ‘listen again’ to your chosen station’s previous shows – which just like you I do ! Rest assured I won’t be making the same schoolboy errors I’ve heard myself make on there this week, but whatever happens when the mic fader goes up the tunes will always be top notch …
