It’s that time of year again ! Another year older and another birthday road trip to indulge in, eating, drinking (Coke/Pepsi of course!) and listening to fab soul CDs in the car en route ! Except this time I went a week early due to a window of opportunity on the home/work front and planned a night at a BnB in Newquay after a nice long drive cross country with a scenic route to be followed home on Saturday with many stops along the way. Although the journey there went well, no major traffic problems and good driving weather, the minute I pulled up outside by seaside quest house it started raining – and refused to stop until it was nearly time for my head to hit the pillow. Wind was the main weather issue on day two but it didn’t stop me enjoying a much needed break from the usual scene – I won’t bore you with the finer details, just check the photos on Facebook !

As I said at the start, my actual birthday isn’t till next Monday, so I’ve already pre-recorded the next show so I can take Nathan out for a slap up meal without us having to rush back to the studio straight away.  In the meantime, savour this week’s super soul selections on the repeat play this Saturday at 5pm and I will speakto you when I’m older …

A couple of weeks ago I was DJing at a party in Chelmsford which finished quite early, so when loading the car up again afterwards, the function in the larger downstairs hall was still in full swing. It was a Salsa Event and as I lugged box after box of gear past the main door I couldn’t help but hear some fabulous sounds coming out from in there – or fail to notice the lovely ladies attending either ! Just before I left, I got chatting by my car to a particularly gorgeous creature who was “taking a breath of fresh air” and enthused about how wonderful the monthly party was and that I should get involved. On another day, in a previous life I would have snapped her hand off, but Nathan was waiting for his dad in the car and well … you know ! However, the tunes I caught really fired my imagination, salsa music in itself is pretty cool, but I am sure I heard a number of classic soul songs being performed salsa-style, one being a female version of “Love TKO” by Teddy Pendergrass. I have vowed to investigate further before the summer is out, so keep an ear open for the odd “salsa-soul” tune creeping into the show – and if you are in Chelmsford on the right day of the month, look out for me on the dancefloor impressing foxy chicks with my Latin moves !!!!!

Got back in the old routine this week after two weeks school hoildays – bliss ! Having said that, Nathan and I did get a chance to do one or two things we can’t do in term time and that included finally getting a chance to pop in (as opposed to walking past…) the Basildon Art Gallery just across the way from our studios at Gateway 97.8FM . Usually it is long shut when we are in the Eastgate Centre for the show, but we found ourselves in town last week and couldn’t resist taking a look at some of the interesting works of art on display – not least the cow with a map of Basildon for its skin !!! If you can handle a little culture in your life I recommend a visit – it is FREE ! – as is listening to my show, which can sometimes be a cultural experience too, check this week’s songs below to see what you think then tune in this evening at 5pm for the repeat play and again on Monday for the next brand new LIVE show …

I am afraid its another tale of a “senior moment” to share with you this week. There I was in Asda today stocking up on food essentials for the next couple of weeks using my little plastic friend instead of trying to squeeze blood out of another sad little £20 note when suddenly it dawned on me, standing at the till packing my bags, that I just could not remember my PIN number. We’ve all done it, old or young, but us old gits are more prone to such an occurence than others ! I had all the right digits in my head (well nearly!) but could I get them in the right order ? Could I thump ! So after much head scratching, emergency plans B & C were wheeled out before I was eventually allowed to leave the store with my goodies…

It’s days like these that you really need to fall back on your favourite old soul & disco tunes for stress relief in these modern hi-tech days and luckily I have plenty to fall back on, which I share with you week by week on my show each Monday & Saturday evenings.
