Essex police are investigating  a number of officers as part of their inquiry into incidents involving the handling of child abuse cases.

Twenty five serving and four former police officers are on notice while the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) looks into the handling of 49 child abuse cases covered between 2011 and 2015.

Six of the officers are being criminally investigated. Essex Police confirm that “immediate actions to put things right” are in place.

Since the announcement of the investigation by the IPCC in February this year, the scale of the case has almost doubled. Initially the IPCC was to investigate 12 police officers. The case now involves investigations of 29 officers, all below the rank of Assistant Chief Constable.
