A BASILDON student who hopes to spend her life combating global warming has won a week-long stay at an American university. Dannie Slade, 17, will visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the summer. The teen, who studies law, psychology, geography and Spanish at Palmers College, is one of 50 students from across the UK who won a place on the trip. Alert at Lakeside shopping centre causes evacuation

Firefighters were called to an alert inside Lakeside shopping centre, West Thurrock, after a smoke canister was set off in a shop and filled the shopping centre’s Debenhams end with smoke. The building was evacuated by centre staff just after 9:10pm on Tuesday, 7 May 2013, at the north end of the shopping centre, near to Debenhams. Second man charged with murder of Liam Holden in Grays

A second man has appeared in court and has now been charged with the murder of a 35-year-old man in Grays on March 10. Liam Holden, died after being attacked outside the Euro Lounge nightclub, where he had been spending a night out with friends. He was taken to Queen’s Hospital, Romford, with serious head injuries, but could not be saved and died in the early hours. Police are appealing for witnesses and have released an efit image of a man officers would like to speak to in connection with an indecent exposure in Basildon. A FORMER leader of Basildon Council has died. Tony Archer, who was still a Tory councillor in the Billericay East ward, is understood to have passed away on Saturday following a recent illness. Current council leader Tony Ball, announced the sad news on Twitter.
