Mersea Island beach huts fire cause is 'undetermined'

An investigation into a fire which destroyed 10 beach huts has proved inconclusive.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday 9 April on Mersea Island, Essex.

It was recorded as "undetermined" as "there was not enough evidence to verify if the cause was accidental or deliberate," Essex Fire and Rescue Service said.

Essex Police said it would not be investigating the matter at this stage.

At the time of the blaze, the fire service said several of the huts contained propane gas cylinders which had to be removed and cooled to make them safe.

According to Facebook group, Crimewatch Mersea Island, other beach huts nearby had been broken into before the fire.

A post about the incident on a group called "Secret Mersea Island" had attracted more than 1,000 posts with people calling it "heartbreaking" and "incredibly sad".
