Whose Lorraine….no ‘The Rain’ LOL how many times does sharon mention Lorraine! Listen now to her recording

I met Sharon White our Gardening Guru yesterday this morning in her sunny potting shed, what a glorious morning.  I love the sound of nature and listening to the birds tweeting, finally we can have the door open, and let the outside warmth in!

Sharon has spoken today about Lacewings are common flying insects about 12 – 15mm and with green bodies and lovely delicate green lacy wings which lie folded on their back when at rest. The adults eat only honey, pollen, and nectar, which they need to reproduce.

The larvae, on the other hand, consume aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, leafhopper nymphs caterpillar eggs, scales, and whiteflies.

They are best known as a predator of aphids, and fully deserve the nickname “aphid lion” as a single insect can consume 100-600 aphids in its lifetime. Adults hibernate over winter, and breed in the summer. The first larvae to emerge are brown , about 4mm long, with sharp nipping claws at the front (beware!). The older larvae are paler, about 13mm long, with bristles on their back. Lacewings are supplied as juveniles, or larvae.

Eastgate joins the St George’s Day Basildon Spectacular

Eastgate has joined forces with Basildon Borough Council and South Essex College for a Town Centre shopping spectacular to celebrate St George’s Day on Saturday April 23rd, which is also Easter Saturday.

Basildon Town Square will be replete with entertainment that day. There will be In the town centre a traditional farmers market will be offering a selection of produce and goods whilst street entertainers will be treating shoppers to demonstrations of stilt walking, juggling and much, much more.

Then in Eastgate itself there will be a display of fashion designs from the talented students at South Essex College all week, with a distinctly English twist. The exhibition reaches its climax on St George’s Day itself, as the students model their own designs, including fashions based on the Flag of St George. And as a final treat, Eastgate and its partners are actively seeking a model to wear a special St George’s Day themed wedding dress made from recycled wedding dresses by the students as a prelude to the following week’s Royal Wedding.

The three individual fashion shows will be presented by BBC Essex’s Sadie Nine at 12.30pm, 1.45 pm and 3.00pm, and shoppers will be invited all week to nominate the best design works on display in the exhibition for the “Shoppers Choice Fashion Designer of the Year”.
