Basildon community radio station Gateway 97.8 has been shortlisted in the annual national Community Radio Awards.

The station has made the shortlist a record six times, which was whittled down from more than 460 entries from 90 stations from every corner of the UK.

The station has picked up nominations in the following categories:

  • Community Show of the Year, for their VE Day special.
  • Live Event or Outside Broadcast of the Year, for the Memories Bus.
  • Entertainment Show of the Year, for Coffee & Tea with Tyler Pittaway.
  • Speech & Journalism of the Year, for the Basildon Question Time event.
  • Young Person of the Year, for Johnny Jenkins.
  • Special Coverage: 2019 General Elections Coverage.

Johnny Jenkins, the station Editor, said:

“We are delighted to have been recognised among a large number of other stations doing great work across the UK.

“We have worked very hard over the past year on our community broadcasting and have stayed on air during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m particularly pleased to be nominated for the Young Person of the Year and to be recognised for our special 2019 General Election coverage, where we were on air live for 12 hours.”

Martin Steers, awards chair, said:

“This year has been a challenge for the sector, but community radio stations have responded by stepping up engagement with their local communities, with more programming and innovative presenters across the country broadcasting from home.

“It is clear to see from this, that passionate presenters, volunteers, and staff are really there for their audiences. These local radio stations are truly at the heart of their communities.

“We wish Gateway 97.8 good luck and can’t wait to host the ceremony virtually next month.”
