The former Mayor of Thurrock, Yash Gupta, celebrated his 81st birthday in 2016. Still sprightly, he is an influential, popular and highly respected former-councillor who has successfully completed twenty years of service. Yash will be entering The Inspiration Zone – on Sunday 22nd January with me Jag Singh ‘on our local radio’ Gateway 97.8. Yash and his grandson Ravi Agrewal will be discussing Yash’s new inspiring book titled – ‘I Can and I Will.’
Yash Gupta came to Thurrock, Essex in 1974 following his appointment as an Educational Psychologist for Essex County Council. Three years later he was promoted to the post of Senior Educational Psychologist in charge of delivering psychological services in South West Essex. His patch included the districts of Thurrock and Basildon.
Yash states that during his 22 years’ service as a psychologist he has assisted up to six to eight thousand children, their parents and teachers.
Yash thoroughly enjoyed his job but having decided to retire in August, 1995 nevertheless continued working for another five years as part time psychologist providing service to Thurrock and Basildon colleges.
Yash entered local politics to continue serving the local communities and providing support to those residents who did not have any say in local decision making. As a councillor he worked hard at promoting the equality agenda in the Council and through other statutory bodies such as the Primary Care Trust and the Thurrock Development Corporation, serving the latter as a member of the Board of Governors.
Over the years Yash has worked hard to promote the interests of local voluntary, community and faith sectors and helped to create better relations between the representative organisations and the Council.
He has always devoted much of his spare time to strengthening the local voluntary sector through working with other colleagues on the boards of eight local voluntary, community and faith organisations.
Yash has consistently championed 0lder people’s rights and has been instrumental in setting up the Older People’s Parliament which has met regularly in the Council Chamber for the last six years. He was a regular visitor to five older people’s complexes in his Grays, Thurrock Ward, where he listened to any grievances from the residents and attempted to resolve them with the help of council officers.
Yash first visited the Gateway 97.8 studios last year as a special guest on ‘The Inspiration Zone’ and spoke about his challenges as a young boy when he experienced the brutality of the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
If you missed Yash’s interview at Gateway 97.8 last year you may catch up by logging onto my YouTube channel and hear his amazing story.
On Sunday, Yash and his grandson will be talking about Yash’s new inspirational book – ‘I Can and I Will.’ In this amazing book Yash speaks about the challenges he has experienced throughout his life during his political, community and volunteering career.
I am always looking for motivational stories to share with the people and after hearing Yash’s story the question that came to mind was, “How is it possible for one human being to have contributed so much in one lifetime for the betterment of others including the elderly, disadvantaged, younger generations and future generations?” Yash is a true example for many to follow on how we can make this planet a better and safer place for us all to live in harmony.
So, please join me Jag Singh on Sunday at 15:00 and hear Yash speak for the first time about his new book – ‘I Can and I Will.’ For information on how to obtain your personal copy of Yash’s new book simply click on the link below:
