More than a thousand people were evacuated from a Basildon nightclub in Essex last night after a fire broke out in the ceiling of a first floor stage area in the early hours of the morning.

Four fire engine crews and police were called, and rushed to Liquid & Envy on Festival Leisure Park, at just before 2am following reports of a blaze.

Flames were found ripping through the ceiling of a stage area on the club’s first floor, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to tackle the fire. A high-pressure fan was used to clear the nightclub, after the fire was extinguished.

One woman was treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation, and a man was treated for burns to his arms.

Divisional Officer Stuart McMillian, incident commander of Essex Fire & Rescue Service, said:

“Some 1,100 people were being evacuated from the building as crews arrived at the scene and fortunately there were no major injuries.

“The fire has damaged the staging area and some of the internal furnishings in one area of the nightclub. It is too early to say what caused the incident but we will be looking into that now the fire is out.”

A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident. Were you there?

  1. I was leaving my warehouse after doing some work about 3am this morning saw loads of people with space blankets, police shut off roads and checked taxis and cars it was all a bit mad, glad to hear that no one was seriously injured.

  2. Not surprised. There’s always been trouble there. Maybe this will finally force the issue, and the owners and the council to sit down together and sort something out before someone does actually get killed.
