The number of people in Basildon and East Thurrock claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit has fallen by 57% in the last five years.

In the area alone, 1477 people are now thought to be in employment compared to when the Conservative government first came back into power in 2010.

This is replicated across the UK, with two million more people in employment compared to 2010 figures.

Stephen Metcalfe, the local MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock has welcomed the latest figures, commenting: “I am so pleased to hear of the continued good news for the people of South Basildon and East Thurrock.”

Metcalfe credits the hard work from the Conservative government stating: “As a Government for working people we’re committed to go further, as we work towards a Britain of full employment, which offers working people security at every stage of their life.”

The latest figures also indicate that UK total pay has increased by 2.7 per cent and more women are in employment than ever before too.
