Neil Gits Stuffed
It’s been part of our Monday evening tradition for quite a while now that we go out for a nice big meal at one of the local pubs or restaurants (and there are a lot to choose from!) on our way to the studio, so with nearly half the year gone I’d thought I’d check through my diary and see which ones we’d frequented the most. The Toby Carvery has benefitted from our custom a few times, as has the KFC of course (great for a quick fix when in a rush!) but the top two turned out to be Frankie & Bennies, with their “Monday Discount” offer always appealing and with EIGHT visits in 2013 the two local Harvesters came out in first place ! So I asked Nathan which one of the dozen or so on our list he’d most like to revisit one more time and inevitably we ended up at … The Harvester !!! Usually we prefer the Langdon Hills one, but for at least a little change we tried the Five Bells restaurant – but the food was just as yummy and we managed to fill our little tums to the brim within our weekly budget ! 
You can almost hear my contented smile during the repeat play of the show on Saturday at 5pm and like me enjoy a terrific selection of tunes from the 70s & 80s soul, jazz-funk & disco world, but I’ve got to wait to Monday before another fab feed up ! Maybe we’ll try somewhere new this time …

Neil Gits To Enjoy A Day Out In Basildon !
You might have heard my voice twice on Gateway last Saturday (apart from the odd “are you an old git…” trailer for the show !) as I phoned in “live” on Ros Connors’ morning show to let the good people of Basildon know of an interesting event I was involved in taking place in the Town Square. Wearing one of my many hats as a full-time professional DJ, I hosted the special “UK Strongest Man Show” put on by Basildon Market to raise awareness of their traders – and what a brilliant day it was ! Adrian “Mighty” Smith was a true gent and put on two thoroughly entertaining and eye-opening shows during the day, for which the weather held and a healthy crowd of shoppers gathered round our “arena” out of curiosity. Mr. Mighty also popped up to the studios for a chat on air with Jack Sullivan later in the afternoon after I’d twisted his arm (yes, I twisted the UK’s Strongest Man’s arm !!!) and it was good to bump into a few familiar Basildon based faces in between shows too. So what has this got to do with “The Old Gits Soul Show” ? Not much really, except that being a committed “nightbird” I had to be up at OMG O’Clock to get the PA set up and once up and running, the first thing I did was put a selection of fave “Soul Soothers” to relax and prepare me for the day ahead – hopefully the town’s early morning shoppers enjoyed hearing the likes of Gerald Alston, Glenn Jones, George Benson & Freddie Jackson drifting across the mother & child fountain !

Wow ! What a show we had on Monday ! As usual there were plenty of smashing soul, disco & jazz-funk grooves to enjoy from the dizzy days of the 70s & 80s, but squeezed in between I was joined in the studio by the oh-so-lovely “Soul Ladies” for a natter, chewing over some of their fave tunes and, with precious lttle arm-twisting at all, singing a fabulous live “acapella” version of a classic 70s disco No:1. I was thinking during a quiet moment on my recent Cornwall how I would briefly summarize my musical journey to my latest birthday, should anyone ever need to know ! Like most 51 year olds, I watched “Top Of The Pops” religiously and listened to the Radio 1 Top 40 EVERY week without fail as a nipper and liked all sorts of music that made the charts, but do recall lots of mid-70s hits by Barry White and The Stylistics making a big impression. By the latter part of the decade, I was sucked into the disco era from loving the tunes played at our school discos by the likes of Earth Wind & Fire and Chic – then it was time to get a job !
In the early 80s I was making money faster than I knew how to spend it, but gave it a good go going to plenty of “discotheques” (or nightclubs as we now call them – I think!) and dashing off in my lunch hour to buy the best tracks I’d danced to by artists like D Train and Sharon Redd. As the “dance decade” evolved I followed every trend going from electro to hip hop to house to rave music, but a mellower side of me was growing and none of it compared to the smooth soul of Luther Vandross and Anita Baker. Next stop, the 90s ! By now I was a full-time DJ and had to keep up with more of those five minute fads – hardcore, speed garage, trance or UK garage, whatever, I bought it and played it, but only when the latest Brand New Heavies or Jamiroquai cut arrived did I get anything like the warm feeling of discovering those old 70s & 80s gems.
And so here we are in the 00s – the irony of that being that the new century brought us all the wonders of the worldwide web and the opportunity to re-discover old friends and classic tunes that had almost been forgotten, as well as superb new music by groups such as Cool Million & The Sunburst Band through social networking and internet radio, not forgetting Gateway 97.8 !! It’s that time of year again ! Another year older and another birthday road trip to indulge in, eating, drinking (Coke/Pepsi of course!) and listening to fab soul CDs in the car en route ! Except this time I went a week early due to a window of opportunity on the home/work front and planned a night at a BnB in Newquay after a nice long drive cross country with a scenic route to be followed home on Saturday with many stops along the way. Although the journey there went well, no major traffic problems and good driving weather, the minute I pulled up outside by seaside quest house it started raining – and refused to stop until it was nearly time for my head to hit the pillow. Wind was the main weather issue on day two but it didn’t stop me enjoying a much needed break from the usual scene – I won’t bore you with the finer details, just check the photos on Facebook !
As I said at the start, my actual birthday isn’t till next Monday, so I’ve already pre-recorded the next show so I can take Nathan out for a slap up meal without us having to rush back to the studio straight away.
