I got my Big Road Trip in early this week to avoid all the carnage on the roads expected over the Bank Holiday Weekend and made an ambitious trek up north to watch “The World’s Oldest Football Club” in action, Sheffield FC, who actually play in a village called Dronfield in Derbyshire, just across the Yorkshire border from the city itself. I plan my footy adventures meticulously as I usually only visit each club once in my life (651 so far !!) and want to make sure each mission goes as smoothly as possible.
This one though did not got without a hiccup or two. I was an estimated ten minutes from the ground when I was suddenly confronted on a roundabout on the A61 with the dreaded “Road Closed” sign in place and an ominous yellow and black “Diverted Traffic” sign alongside pointing in completely the opposite direction ! I uttered a couple of naughty words, took a deep breath and decided the best plan of action was to play ball and follow the diversion as indicated – and a ridiculous 50 minutes later I finally pitched up in the club car park !!
Luckily, I had allowed a serious amount of extra time for my long journey ‘just in case’ so I was still able to do a full “photo-shoot” pre-match and had the unexpected bonus of visiting numerous fascinating areas on the outskirts of Sheffield that I had never seen before on past drives across the city, as well as getting an extra soul CD played in the car !! Every cloud, etc ….
Last week’s show can still be heard via “Listen Again” here on the website – just search for ‘Cool Soul’ – and having kept my Bank Holiday Monday free of commitments, I will be on air LIVE for you between 7 & 9pm as usual this week.
