Listen: a journey through British retail
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Britain’s biggest parcel delivery service, Chief customer officer Chris Ashworth has looked back on how our shopping habits have changed over the last five decades – looking at the items that flow in and out of fashion (who remembers a Tamagotchi?) and the ways in which Brits shop.
There’s no doubt that the popularity of online shopping has grown in recent years, and the data has found that men make an average of 64 purchases online each year, compared to 56 for women. 3 in 10 men (30%) receive more than three online shopping deliveries a week, compared to just 25% of Women.
When it comes to what we buy, it appears price (60%) is the main motivating factor in what we purchase, with also voucher codes (27%) influencing our shopping decisions. Recommendations remain key for shoppers, with word of mouth (25%) from our friends, family and colleagues heavily influencing decisions followed by the power of social media reviews (24%).
