Over the last few years I’ve got into a little annual routine, connected to my well documented love of chocolate. With no regular work and very limited income, I’ve always made sure that I am well stocked with the essentials in life for those moments when you need to indulge in a little pleasure to keep you on the right side of sanity – we are talking choc chip cookies, turkish delight, jaffa cakes and LOTS of various Cadbury’s products, especially Creme Eggs !! Alas those wonderful oval choccie treats are aimed primarily at the seasonal Easter market and not generally available all year roud. Hmmm…. there’s a problem !
They usually appear in the shops soon after Xmas but by the end of April they are like gold dust to find, so what does a chocoholic do ? Yes, stockpile of course ! With many other products on the shelves, that is not a very public spirited thing to do, but I can live with myself for doing it in this situation – this man NEEDS Creme Eggs !! Now, come the hot summer months around July-August, there’s no way you can keep them in a cupboard or on the kitchen unit, they would be all goey soon and not in a good way ! So in the fridge they must go, and I have made my supply last almost through to January before, my last one in 2023 being savoured on Boxing Day – except it wasn’t at it’s best … oh dear !
I realized the sell by date on my most recent batch was around July and keeping them chilled was making the delicious filling rather more “hard boiled” than “soft & runny”, to compare them to traditional eggs, so I vowed this year to eat them all by the end of August to enjoy them at their best, rather than put up with a couple of months of tough chewy ones. Recently though I found a rogue egg ! It wasn’t hard through being kept cold, it was simply about 50% chocolate (not always a bad thing!) but my teeth got confused and when I bit it that little bit harder to reach “goo heaven” they went straight through into my bottom lip – OUCH !
Luckily, the pain and discomfort subsided within 24 hours and as it wasn’t a Monday I was able to present my show totally as usual instead of with a slightly impaired voice – although it would have been worth it to get my Cadbury’s fix !! Tune in this week to see if I survive eating my first Pot Noodle for lunch in years without burning my tongue and enjoy listening to great soul, jazz-funk & disco tunes like these ones ….
