Dog owners warned about car safety
Over half (59%) of Brits have travelled in a car with their dog entirely unsecured within the last six months.
Most concerning, almost 1 in 10 (9%) have travelled in the most dangerous way for them both, with the dog sitting on their lap.
And perhaps more worryingly, only 1 in 5 of believe that they have a complete understanding of the Highway Code rule on restraining a dog in the car, while 13% say they don’t understand it.
Tavo, who commissioned the research*, is now warning drivers about the importance of restraining pets in vehicles to reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of a collision – not only to the pet but also to other occupants in the vehicle.
Aston spoke to TV vet Dr Scott Miller & Karen McDonnell, head of global relations at RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents).
