Listen: cleaner energy, lower bills
A recent public opinion poll has revealed that a significant majority of Brits believe that tackling high energy bills should be the government’s top priority as the country prepares for winter. When asked whether reducing energy bills or immigration is more important, an overwhelming 74% of respondents stated that addressing the rising cost of energy should take precedence, compared to 26% who feel that reducing immigration is more pressing.
This finding comes in the wake of increasing public concern about energy costs – exacerbated by the recent announcement that a typical household’s annual bill will rise by £149 in October under a revised Ofgem price cap. The situation has been further aggravated by Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ controversial decision to scrap winter fuel payments for pensioners not in receipt of benefits or pension credit, which previously provided up to £300.
The cut has sparked widespread concern, with many MPs urging the government to reconsider the move – especially for pensioners who narrowly miss qualifying for pension credit. In fact, new data suggests that 1 in 4 people are worried about their elderly relatives’ ability to afford energy bills this winter. In response to the growing crisis, there has been a surge in public support for more sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions.
