Are pensioners facing poverty after winter fuel allowance cut?

From this winter, households in England and Wales will no longer be entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment unless they receive Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits.

However, two in five (40%) pensioners have not yet checked if they qualify for Pension Credit, despite the 21^st December deadline to apply – and still qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment – looming.

Concerningly, 11% of pensioners who have been officially told they qualify for Pension Credit haven’t applied for it yet, with only a fraction of those (2%) planning to do so by the deadline, according to research by Royal London.
