Small Businesses unable to expand workforces in 2024

Small businesses, often heralded as the backbone of the UK economy, are facing challenges that threaten their ability to grow, sustain operations, and remain competitive in a rapidly shifting economic environment.

According to a newly released report from HSBC UK, many small businesses are struggling to meet increasing customer demands, expand their workforce, and build the resilience needed to weather ongoing financial pressures.

69% of small businesses report being unable to scale their operations to meet rising customer demand, highlighting a concerning gap between market opportunities and operational capacity.

Aston spoke to Martin McTague OBE, national chair of Federation of Small Businesses and Tom Wood, head of business banking at HSBC UK.
