£10,000 raised for Basildon church vandalised by thugs
Churchgoers in Bowers Gifford have so far raised more than £10,000 to repair, damage and install CCTV, after their church was attacked by vandals for the second time in a month.
St Margaret’s, which dates back to the 14th Century, was broken into on 8th November shortly after Sunday service. This time vases and a lectern were broken, a stained glass window and the church organ was smashed. Some undisclosed items were also stolen. Essex Police have since arrested two boys aged 15, and 16 on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage. Church Warden Nikki Dilorenzo has set up a fundraising page online to repair the damage estimated at around £15,000. The pair have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries. Police also suggest that some items stolen have been recovered.
Gateway’s Ros Connors spoke with the Reverend David Ibiayo about the heartwarming community spirit following the incident.
There is a fundraising page here for anyone who wants to contribute.
