40 years on from the UK’s first ever mobile phone call

The tradition of calling a loved one to see in the New Year is alive and well, according to new research by Vodafone.

40 years after the UK’s first mobile call was made to toast the start of 1985, a new study suggests, 2 in 5 people (39%) plan to pick up the phone to wish their nearest and dearest a happy New Year in 2025.

More than half (55%) said they planned to use the messaging service WhatsApp as a way of sending New Year greetings compared to 37% who favoured sending a  text and almost 1 in 4 (23%), who’ll be video calling their family and friends.

Aston spoke to Michael Harrison, the man who made the very first mobile phone call.
