Any fellow ‘Old Git’ will tell you that the world is completely bonkers these days. The ironically named ‘reality’ TV with all its so-called ‘celebrities’ and all the social media posts around their meaningless lives, seem to be treated as far more important by thousands of people than the simple things that truly matter in genuine real life. When I have the misfortune to suffer adverts on TV and radio, I actually haven’t a clue what half of them are on about, it just sounds / looks like 30 seconds of gibberish – and what’s with all these constant commemorative days that the woman on the instore PA system at Asda keeps prattling on about when I am in there ? “National Windscreen Wipers Day” … “International Day Of Polystyrene” … if you haven’t heard of them yet, you will – they are coming soon I reckon !
Months are getting ‘re-named’ too , “Movember” seems to be here to stay but I think I caught someone referring to “Vegruary” recently. “Dry January” has just finished and what a brainless concept that is ! Encouraging people not to drink at a time of year when pubs & bars need all the custom they can get to survive at a very quiet period when things are tough enough as it is. Maybe it’s not as daft as it sounds though. I seem to recall from my days working in licensed premises that there is a bigger profit on soft drinks than alcohol, so though they may be cheaper for the customers than beer or wine, the pubs make more money selling orange juice and coca cola !
Being a bit of maverick at heart, I decided to wet my lips in ‘Dry January’ conjuring up £2.30 from my tight ‘entertainment budget’ to spend on a half of cider in one of the pubs I used to work in, but hadn’t set foot inside for around six years. Not much had changed there I am pleased to report !Placing myself on a bar stool I soon got chatting to one of the regulars and we spent an hour discussing football, women, music and more – two ‘Old Gits’ moaning about everything wrong with the world & coming up with perfect solutions to it all ! Then I had to leave & come back to earth …
Thank god for music, especially soul music – how would we survive without it ! I live for Monday nights and my two hours in Studio 1 sharing some of the finest tunes in the world from the best days of our lives with you.
