New ice sculpture unveiled to raise awareness of older people living in poverty

Turning the heating on was once standard practise for most of us in the winter months, however today, it’s more of a luxury.

In fact, many people delay switching it on and find other ways to stay warm, but for millions living in poverty, heating is simply not an option.

The Independent Age helpline has received thousands of calls from older people taking drastic measures to stay warm, from going to bed in hats and coats to only living in one room.

To raise awareness of these shocking facts, the charity, which supports older people facing financial hardship, is unveiling a striking ice sculpture depicting Rob and representing older people on a low income in this situation to say ‘don’t let us freeze, don’t let us be forgotten’.

Aston spoke to George Stanbury, campaigns manager at Independent Age.
