Neil Gits A Taste For Soup

1st March 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

Tales from the “Old Git’s Kitchen” again this week ! I’ve been trying all sorts of food lately that comes in tins and would make a cheap but tasty meal with either rice or pasta. Maybe a nice dessert with a couple of dollops of ice cream, like peaches or pears too. If it comes in a tin, I’m in ! I’ve had some mixed results on the meat side of things, some quite successful which I am thinking of trying again and being a little more adventurous with by adding in sweetcorn, peppers or mushrooms possibly. Others were less impressive and are filed under “never again!” – top of that list being those Fray Bentos tinned pies – yuk & yuk again !!

Getting the thumbs up were chilli con carne, minced beef and onions, chicken curry, stewed steak, chicken in white wine sauce and of course tuna which I use quite regularly anyway in both sandwiches & pasta dishes. It was a big “NO!” to the tinned meatballs though – whether in gravy or tomato sauce, both left a nasty after-taste and made me windy !! However, there was one surprising discovery along the way ….

If you know me well, you’ll know I just don’t do hot drinks – no tea, no coffee, no hot chocolate, no bovril – nothing hot at all, and that included soup … up until a couple of weeks ago ! I used to make it for my son when he was little (with bread soldiers!) but I haven’t touched any myself for years, but whilst perusing the aisles in Asda, I just suddenly thought “why not?” & randomly picked up a Heinz ‘Cream of Chicken’ … and it was delicious ! They say your tastes change as you get older so here was the proof ! My mum used to make me Oxtail soup as a kid and I’ve tried that again now too, equally pleasing – not only that but the own-brand shop ones that are much cheaper don’t taste any different. Nice …

No surprises on the music front this week – your two hours of the good stuff on the playlist is made up of 100% quality soul, jazz-funk & disco goodness mainly from the 70s & 80s.
