I don’t buy a daily newspaper anymore. I used to get two – a national one six days a week, plus the local one from Monday to Friday, but I haven’t bought either of them for over five years now. What’s the point in spending hard earned cash just to depress yourself at the breakfast table first thing every morning ? We all know what the press are like !
The only bigger waste of money is smoking – who in their right mind would spend nearly £20 on a packet of cigarettes that make your clothes smell & your breath stink, whilst giving yourself a fatal disease in the process ?! Some of the things we do in our lives just don’t make any sense … and the newspapers are full of them !
However, I do have one exception – my weekly football newspaper which I have been loyally buying ever since it first appeared 25 years ago in 1999. I used to skip quickly through certain sections before I retired as I was so busy in my life, but now I can read every match report, interview, special feature and study all the league tables and results in depth, making my copy last all week. A much better way to start your day as a football fan !
I’ve always had it delivered to my door, I am just not a morning person and can’t risk the local shop selling out (or closing!) before I finally get up and about. A new company took over the task of getting my paper to my letterbox last year and there have been a couple of teething problems which were soon rectified, but last week they managed to send me TWO copies – one on Sunday and another on Monday morning. I felt sorry for the person who didn’t get their newspaper, but after exchanging a couple of emails, the company said to keep the extra copy.
Although I don’t have much love for newspapers generally these days, I do miss a regular supply of newsprint coming through my door – it’s handy for speading out on the floor if you are doing some messy cleaning and don’t want to splash muck on the carpet and also for shoving inside your wet muddy boots to help them dry out after a good walk ! So my extra free copy is now sitting on the stairs waiting to prove useful in my life rather than make it more misearble like my old ones were doing !
