National Telephone Day fuels fond phone flashbacks
From lifting heavy receivers and getting tangled in curly cords, to memorising your best friend’s number just to call and hope their dad did not pick up – the landline phone has been part of the nation’s fabric for generations.
Now, with the UK phasing out traditional landlines for the nationwide Digital Voice switchover, National Telephone Day (25th April) is stirring up a mix of nostalgia and confusion.
Awkward call-answering TikToks and retro rotary memes are trending, while a TikTok challenge daring people to recite a friend’s number from memory usually ends in failure – 66% of us say they cannot remember a single contact number without checking their mobile, a far cry from the days of phonebooks and Rolodexes, which are now more urban legend than regular household items.
