Listen: hidden costs of care

How do you manage the extra demands on your time caring for an ailing parent? Should you retire earlier than planned, perhaps leaving a career you love and which is a key part of your life? Do you switch to a job which gives you less satisfaction but more time to be with a loved one? Or do you carry on and try to absorb the extra responsibilities?

This is the dilemma faced by millions of people typically in their 50s or 60s as they watch their ageing parents’ health decline.

While the rapidly worsening state of some parents’ health leaves some with no option but to retire, reduce hours or change their job, the founder of Carents®, former GP Jackie Gray, believes many people should think twice, especially before they resign to take up a greater care role.

Aston spoke to Dr Jackie Gray, founder of Carents.
