Listen: World Wellbeing Week tips

This week (24th to 30th June) is World Wellbeing Week.

Ros spoke to psychotherapist Margaret Ward-Martin who gave us tips and advice on looking after our wellbeing. Here are some of the tips from Margaret:

  1. Mightily celebrate the wins.  If managing to wash yourself is a win – great stuff; if not reaching out to your toxic friend is a win – more power to you.
  2. Do not judge where you are at.  If you didn’t wash or did reach out to your toxic ex – don’t beat yourself up.
  3. Do less.   Do nothing.  You are not obliged to fix, respond, jump, panic, make a decision.   TAKE …. A…..BEAT.  Work at reflecting and responding rather than reacting.  Give yourself the option of not engaging.
  4. Tolerate your pain.  It’s horrible.  It will lessen or pass or you will learn how to manage it.
  5. Avoid extremes.  Eating too little or too much; sleeping all day and not sleeping at night; extreme people who take all your time or emotionally dump all over your serenity.
  6. Don’t expect to be exempt from tough times and challenge.  It’s not reality TV – it’s reality.  No one is that special.
  7. Name it and own it.  Then take charge.  If you are unhappy in a situation, own up to the fact and take responsibility for next steps.
