Neil Gits A New Monitor

21st July 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

Most of us would probably like to support our local independent businesses, but with major national retailers and huge global corporations making it so easy for us to spend our money in their big shiny convenenient superstores or online via a couple of clicks of a mouse, we just find it impossible to resist the temptation. I am as guilty as anyone, with a Tesco Local just round the corner, a large Sainsburys a brisk walk away (with a car park about half the size of the entire town !) and an Asda I drive past every time I leave my house. But there is one shop just up the road that I will only use and never stray from …

Being a notorious technophobe (and getting worse by the week!) I tend to get myself into a bit of a pickle on regular occasions with my various outdated ‘gadgetry’ in the office at “Old Gits HQ” and the shop in question always manage to dig me out of a hole somehow. My current PC is nearly 20 years old (I know … !!) and my first issue with it was when I just could not get it to burn CDs like my previous one did. I popped it round in a state of panic, when I used to burn a LOT of discs, and they immediately identified that my then ‘new’ base didn’t actually have a DVD/CD burner, just a player ! On my birthday in 2019, whilst in Wales on a road trip and very tired, I somehow smashed my old “Nearly But Not Really” smart phone with the tailgate of my car, in a hurry to check in to my hotel – once home it was all fixed by them, good as new, no problem !!

In the last year, I have become an even more frequent customer. I needed a replacement power lead for the equally old hard drive where I store all my Mp3s (but wisely backed up elsewhere) and they had one in stock. Then one day I came downstairs to turn on the PC for the day and the screen was completely dead. Admittedly it was a cheap ‘previously enjoyed’ monitor which they had sold me to replace the old one which reached the end of its natural life in 2023. No panic – they had a root round the shop and found me a much newer, better screen, gave me a couple of helpful tips on how best to look after it and then I gritted my teeth expecting a hefty bill. Maybe £50 to £60 ? Nope … they sold it to me for a tenner ! Five quid less than the emergency one two years ago which probably should have lasted a little longer. I was well pleased, once again such excellent service, provided with helpful advice & a cheery smile !

Thankfully I know much more about soul music and its various associated genres than I do about technology, so you can look forward to two hours of great songs, accompanied by plenty of fascinating facts at your fingertips from your information collation station each Monday at 7pm Here is last week’s selection ….
