Laura Jane Clark on why households could save thousands by going green

A major new report has revealed that UK households could save up to £37,000 over 15 years by adopting clean home technologies like heat pumps, solar panels, insulation, and EV chargers. The report, developed by OVO and reviewed by academics at the universities of Leeds, Exeter and Stirling, the research highlights how energy-efficient upgrades can deliver payback within just five years—with cumulative savings of £17,600 in that time and net savings exceeding £23,000, even when borrowing costs and inflation are taken into account.

But despite the clear financial case, most families feel priced out. 72% of households say the upfront cost is the biggest blocker, while two-thirds admit immediate financial pressures mean long-term savings are not a priority. The picture is even starker for lower-income households: 92% of those earning under £30,000 say green technologies are simply “out of reach.” Renters, too, feel powerless, with 81% saying they’re stuck in cold, inefficient homes where landlords have little incentive to act.
