Neil Gits To See The Film

26th August 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

I hope you’ve enjoyed the music and features I’ve put together throughout August, it’s been quite a month for me personally, both in and out of Studio 1, so it’s been a relief to spend a couple of hours away from life each week, just enjoying the tunes with you on a Monday night.

The “Featured Album” has been a 1979 release by the “New York City Band” which I only discovered recently thanks to one of our regular listeners Andy and it features the voice of Luther Vandross on most tracks. On doing my due research online for the show I noticed in the small print (yes, I DO read the small print – when it comes to record sleeves & labels!) that the album was in fact the soundtrack for a film called “Sunnyside”. Next step was to see if I could stream it on my TV somehow and lo & behold, it was available for 13 days on Prime Video !

I watched it last week and it actually stars John Travolta’s older brother Joey and a chap called Michael Tucci who is NOT any relation to the well rgarded actor Stanley ! Allowing for the fact that the movie is now 47 years old and a lot has chganged culturally & technologically, it wasn’t too bad to watch and definitely kept my attention. As for the music, inevitably, most of the songs you have heard on my show lately only appear briefly across the 100 minutes and any larger chunks played are mainly the instrumental sections. I also watched ALL the credits at the end and two of the eight songs on the LP don’t even get a mention !

There is one more song for you to enjoy on this Monday’s show, along with another selection from August’s “Spotlight Soul Artist” the Ohio Players, from our unofficial ‘Summer of Funk’ plus a cult classic from the early 80s to round off the month’s “Old Gits Reggae Bits” – then I will be busy in the office all week shaping up for September ! If you can’t tune in LIVE from 7-9 tonight, make sure you investigate our recently re-vamped “Listen Again” page on this site where all my previous shows hang around for up to three months now ! Here is last week’s playlist :
