Nick Knowles on D.I.Y jobs we shouldn’t be under taking ahead of Gas Safety Week

UK households are being warned to stop gambling with dangerous DIY jobs as new research shows overconfidence is leaving homes in chaos and sometimes even putting lives at risk.

Nearly six in ten (58%) of us admit to being overconfident when tackling practical jobs at home and another 42% confess they regularly exaggerate their abilities.

This disconnect between confidence and competence runs through the findings from the Gas Safe Register’s research, released ahead of Gas Safety Week 2025. Only 9% consider themselves “very capable”, with nearly half (46%) describing themselves as “somewhat capable” – observers share the scepticism, rating only 11% as very capable.
