Matt Smith on urgent calls to recruit new generation of HGV drivers
The UK’s logistics sector is facing a critical challenge as the country’s heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver workforce approaches retirement age.
With 55% of current drivers aged between 50 and 65, a significant proportion of this vital workforce is nearing the end of their careers and now a new warning highlights that without a fresh pipeline of new recruits, the smooth running of supply chains, from supermarket shelves to construction sites, could be at risk.
With the research from Samsara highlighting the top priorities for young jobseekers being flexible working hours (42%) and a strong benefits package (34%), a career in the inside lane of logistics is well-placed to deliver on what the next generation is seeking from a career.
