Kate Hardcastle MBE on saving money for Mothers’ Day gift
With Mother’s Day just days away on Sunday (15 March), families across the UK are being reminded there is still time to get the celebration right without rushing out to spend money on gifts that may miss the mark.
In fact, many of the most common Mother’s Day presents are firmly off the wish list for mums. Around 38% say cheap last-minute flowers are the worst gift they can receive, while 27% say household gadgets wrapped up as a “present” miss the point. About 18% say generic chocolates fall flat, 12% say receiving nothing is better than a thoughtless gift, and 5% say the biggest disappointment is a present with no real thought behind it.
Mother’s Day is one of the biggest spending moments of the year. Around 56% of the UK population plan to buy something this year, according to new research from Albert Bartlett, with total spending expected to reach £2.4 billion. But the research suggests many families may be putting their money in the wrong places.
