Neil Gits Pigeons Back

7th April 2026
Posted by Neil Matthew

Whilst some people have had a couple of extra days off work this weekend just gone, it’s been a hive of frantic activity at “Old Gits HQ” – or at least outside round the back. This time last year I was fascinated to observe the behaviour of a pair of pigeons who were setting up home in the trees at the bottom of my garden, which was followed by a few weeks with one of the pair, presumably the female, patiently sitting in the nest waiting for baby pigeons to appear from her eggs … and now they have returned !

I am not sure if it is the same couple of course, for starters they look even bigger & fatter than I recall, whilst back in Spring 2025 I had three cats living next door but one who treated my garden as a sun lounge, play area, hunting ground & restaurant all rolled into one ! So I doubt any sensible pigeon would be foolish enough to return and set up home there without doing a full recky of the immediate area – I can think of three pigeons staight away who definitely won’t be returning this year …. 🙁

But Mr & Mrs Pigeon 2026 will be fine. Our three furry feasters from No:21 have moved on, “Sky” has no plans to visit (and in any case at about 2 years old, she has only progressed to torturing mice at home in Chafford Hundred so far !) and so Daddy has been busy walking round and round the borders of my fake lawn searching for suitable twigs that have landed in the breeze from the river, whilst Mummy has been sitting in the sunshine preening herself and fending off premature baby-making advances from her other half until such time is appropriate !

God, I sound old talking about birds nesting ! But these things happen as you get older, you tend to change the way you look at life and appreciate all sorts of things you’d never even noticed before. Best of all, at nearly 64 years of age I now have a bigger than ever collection of fabulous old soul jazz-funk & disco tunes frm the 70s & 80s which I love sharing with you, along with some fascinating pearls of wsidom about the artists, acquired have learnt along the way.
