Neil Gits A “Flashback”

20th April 2026
Posted by Neil Matthew

I spend a ridiculous amount of time each weekend preparing my Monday evening show, but to be honest it’s not a problem at all. It really is a ‘labour of love’ and 75% of that time is spent wallowing in happy nostalgia as I meander off down ‘Memory Lane’ whilst trawling through all my CDs, vinyl and PC folders full of obscure Mp3s, hunting out those special songs for the show…

At present one of my features is “Seven Inch Soul”, the result of flicking through singles on a particlular shelf in the record library to find something particularly interesting that hasn’t seen the light of day for maybe around 40 years ! A couple of weeks ago, while looking for a completely different song, I found a 1985 release by Imagination that was nowhere near as successful as their heyday releases around 1981 & 1982 such as “Body Talk” or “Just An Illusion”. I had actually forgotten all about it myself but obviously I must have liked it enough to buy it 41 years ago ! What caught my eye though was that it was signed “To Neil” by all three members of the group – Ashley Ingram, Errol Kennedy & of course the ever so flamboyant Leee John …

I do know that I worked with the chaps at the Zero discotheque in 1988 when I was Friday night resident for about 6 months that year, so they must have signed it then, but I couldn’t remember that at all, let alone what the song sounded like or if I even played it that night. Fast forward to 2026 and there I was at 63 years old and seriously of “Old Git” age, holding this magical 7″ single, lost for for another half an hour, reminiscing about my time as a club DJ back in the late 80s ….

I hope to have worked out how to share the photo of the record above or below, but if not, head for “The Old Gits Soul Show” page on Facebook ( a great way to keep in touch between shows) and you can see it on there. Who knows what I will dig out for this Monday’s live show ? In the meantime here are the last two week’s playlists to catch up with …
