F1 update – Miami GP
After a month away the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship returned for round 4 of the season held at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami, Florida for the Miami Grand Prix.
Mercedes driver Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli made it a hat trick of wins by clinching victory finishing ahead of the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri who finished second and third respectively.
Miami GP – top 5:
- 1st: Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli – Mercedes
- 2nd: Lando Norris – McLaren
- 3rd: Oscar Piastri – McLaren
- 4th: George Russell – Mercedes
- 5th: Max Verstappen – Red Bull
Other highlights:
- Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had an eventful race as he first spun on the opening lap at turn 2 on his way to fifth despite incuring a 5 second time penalty for crossing the white line on pit exit.
- Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc would spin on the final lap at turn 3 which dropped him to sixth on the road, however he was given a 20 second time penalty for track limit infringments dropping him to eighth in the final race results.
- Alpine’s Franco Colapinto enjoyed a brilliant weekend as he took his best result of his Formula 1 career so far with a seventh place finish.
- Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar would retire on lap 5 after clipping the inside barrier at turn 14 which then pitched him into the barrier at turn 15.
- Alpine’s Pierre Gasly would also retire in a separate incident on lap 5 whilst battling with Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson at turn 17, the two drivers touched and Gasly barrel rolled with the car landing on the barrier.
- Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson would retire on lap 7 with gearbox problems.
- Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg would retire on lap 8 with a mechanical failure.
News:
- Former Formula 1 driver and 2 time Indycar champion Alex Zanardi passed away at the age of 59.
- The FIA announced that there would be a refinement of the current rules that were imposed at the start of the year.
- Safety car driver Bernd Maylander celebrated his 500th Grand Prix weekend as the official safety car driver.
- F1 bosses announced that the Turkish Grand Prix will return the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 on a five year deal.
- Audi announced that former F1 driver and 4 time endurance champion Allan McNish would become the team’s racing director.
- The next round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada for the Canadian Grand Prix on 22nd to 24th May.
- McLaren’s Landon Norris won Saturday’s sprint race in Miami finishing ahead of team mate Oscar Piastri with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishing third.
- Former Formula 1 driver Hermano Da Silva Ramos who raced in Formula 1 in the 1950s has passed away at the age of 100.
