Ads help us keep this site online
As keen music fans specifically, and loyal listeners generally, I think we can all agree that there are too many commercials in between the output that we primarily tune in for. It’s not just on the radio of course – watching TV, streaming entertainment online, using social media, walking around town centres, you just cannot escape adverts, they are all around – and the majority of them are really annoying too ! I guess they are a necessary ‘evil’ to keep the wheels of business moving round nicely and if you live in that world you probably understand their role in life better than me …
Being retired and able to opt out and avoid most of the biggest irritants in life ( I won’t list them here – I might get a bit controversial !) I like to think that I am largely unaffected by the power of advertising. Even if something does sneak under my radar, the bottom line is that on my low monthly budget there is zero chance of me getting lured in to spend money that I simply haven’t got, however enticing the product may be ! And then I was in Asda on the bi-weekly shop last week …
Needing some more washing powder and checking which of my trusty go-to brands of Ariel & Persil was the cheapest this time, a very brightly packaged box of “Daz” caught my eye on special offer and instantly I thought “Ooh, I’ll try that, they used to show adverts for that on the telly when I was younger, so it must be good !” They got me – hook, line & sinker and of course the happy ending to the story is that my new washing powder is absolutely fine and will be ahead of the other two on my list next time – as long as it is still the cheapest of course …
As I am sure you well know by now, there are absolutely no adverts on my show each week. Once you get past the dreaded n**s at three minutes past seven, it is music all the way – no adverts, no travel updates, no weather checks, no community info, just 1 hour and 57 minutes of top quality soul, jazz-funk & disco from the 70s 80s and beyond, with a sprinkling of music related fun features thrown in for good measure ! Take a look at how it shaped up last week and enjoy the next live show this Monday at 7:03 pm !
