This may not come as news to you if you are one of my much valued loyal listeners who enjoy “The Old Gits Soul Show” every week, from start to finish, come rain shine or technical issues – and if you were tuned in last Monday you will have heard what I am about to write about here…
It was right at the end of the show, with about four minutes to go, and I was doing my little winding down piece of chat, which I admit is a bit rehearsed and partially scripted, as I often ‘back time’ the last song so it doesn’t get chopped off in its prime by the 9pm news jingle and I don;t want to make a mess of it by ‘crashing the vocals’. There I was in full flow when I heard this awful warbling alarm sound, a bit like a modern phone ring but different, and it was going out on air !
One look at the PC screen to my right revealed the issue – it was “Nearby Nick” who is usually a Monday night live listener and regularly pops up on the Facebook messenger thing – and he had accidentally started an audio call instead of typing his normal text message on screen ! I’ve done it myself to other people and I’ve also had it done to me by similarly technically challenged sixty-somethings, so I thought I recognized the sound – our fingers & thumbs are just not cut out to handle some of the intricate manoeuvres you are required to make when using a smart phone or an i-pad !
Off air we laughed it off, it’s not the end of the world after all, the main thing is the music, and the odd spooner-ism by a tongue -tied presenter, a completely wrong track payed off a CD or some other studio mishap brought about by technological confusion are all included for extra entertainment at no additional cost ! The moral of the story is – don’t miss a minute of the show, you never know what little bonus treat awaits …
