‘Misplaced fear’, not cost, stopping employers hiring people with a learning disability

New research has been released by Mencap as part of Learning Disability Week (15th to 21st June) which shows people with a learning disability aren’t getting paid work, despite clear demand from both employers and candidates.

The main finding from employers is that this is not really about cost, it’s more about confidence. Many are worried about getting it wrong or don’t know where to start.

  • 81% of employers surveyed in the East of England believe people with a learning disability can be productive in work, yet 43% employ none.
  • 31% cite health and safety concerns as a barrier.
  • 29% worry about saying or doing the wrong thing.
  • 21% say they don’t know what adjustments to make.
  • But most East of England employers surveyed say adjustments are not expensive (53%) and are straightforward with the right support (68%).

Aston spoke to Dan Scorer, head of policy, public affairs, info and advice.
