F1 update – British GP

Round 9 of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship was held at the iconic Silverstone Circuit in Northampton for the British Grand Prix.

Ferrari picked up their second victory of the year in a race that finished behind the safety car thanks to Charles Leclerc scoring his first victory of the year finishing ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell who finished second with Leclerc’s Ferrari team mate Sir Lewis Hamilton finishing third despite having to serve a 5 second time penalty for a jump start and given a reprimand for a yellow flag infringment post race.

British GP – top 5:

  • 1st: Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
  • 2nd: George Russell – Mercedes
  • 3rd: Sir Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari
  • 4th: Lando Norris – McLaren
  • 5th: Isack Hadjar – Red Bull

Other highlights:

  • McLaren’s Oscar Piastri collided with Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson on the opening lap of the race at the village section of the track, Piastri had a damage front wing which he had to change, he would finish the race in eleventh whilst Lawson finished the race in sixth.
  • Williams’s Alexander Albon collided with Haas’s Oliver Bearman on the opening lap at Brooklands which saw Albon given a 10 second time penalty for causing a collision, Albon would eventually retire on lap 44 whilst Bearman recovered to finish the race in twelfth.
  • Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg would retire on lap 37 when his gearbox failed on the exit of copse corner, this deployed the virtual safety car.
  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen would spin out of the race on lap 47 at stowe corner whilst running as high as third, this bought out the safety car.
  • Mercedes driver Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli would have problem with a wheel sheild which he to had to removed whilst he was easily catching Leclerc for a potential win, Antonelli would finish ninth on the road, however he was given a 5 second time penalty for track limit offences meaning he dropped to fifteenth in the final race results.
  • Williams’s Carlos Sainz finished twelfth on the road, however he was given a 1 lap penalty for overtaking the safety car.

News:

  • Mercedes driver Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli won the sprint race at Silverstone finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton who finished second with McLaren’s Lando Norris finishing third.
  • Audi backed driver Emma Felbermayr took victory in race 1 of the F1 Academy meeting at Silverstone finishing ahead of Alpine backed driver Nina Gademan who finished second with McLaren backed driver Ella Lloyd finishing third. Race 2 saw Red Bull backed driver Alisha Palmowski take her third win of the finishing of wildcard Chiara Battig who finished second after starting from pole which Emma Felbermayr taking third.
  • The F.I.A are looking into the ‘Macarena’ rear wings that Ferrari and Red Bull been using in recent races to see if they’re safe to be used.
  • The 2027 Formula 1 season could feature more sprint races than ever 3 more than the last couple of years.

The next round of the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship will take place at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit in Spa, Belgium for the Belgian Grand Prix on 17th to 19th July.
