Amanda Lamb on renting

How long should you let your adult children live at home? Should you charge them rent, and how much is acceptable? Are theirs partners also welcome, and would you allow them to start a family while they still live under your roof?

These are all questions that are being mulled-over by a growing number of UK parents who are letting their children live at home into adulthood – allowing them to save to get on the property ladder, while stomaching the strain it puts on family life.

New research from Latimer has revealed that the average rent parents are charging their children is just £107 a week – less than the weekly food shop for a family of four (£117)1 – while as many as one in five (22%) let them stay for free.
