Are children starting school without basic skills?

As hundreds of thousands of families across England receive their child’s primary school place today, figures reveal that over a third (37%) of children start school without the basic skills they need for the classroom.

Based on this year’s intake, around 200,000 out of the 600,000 children due to start Reception this September may arrive without key skills such as using the toilet, communicating their needs and basic independence.

To support families, award-winning teacher turned rapper MC Grammar has released a new song, ‘Steps for School’, designed to help children build confidence in everyday routines before starting school.

From everyday routines to fun family activities, families can find more guidance on preparing children for school through the Best Start in Life campaign.
