Are our drinking habits shifting ahead of the summer season?
With two bank holidays, the football world cup and the start of the summer not far away, millions of Brits are preparing for pub gardens, barbecues, festivals and get-togethers.
While alcohol often plays a big role in these occasions and nearly 9 in 10 (89%) UK adults say they plan to drink alcohol at summer events, but for many, the focus is shifting towards moderation rather than excess.
Data suggests it’s not about cutting alcohol out altogether, moderation is increasingly the approach of choice, with around half of Brits saying it’s a key consideration when socialising. In fact, 60% say it’s very important that their drinking feels self-directed, pointing to a move away from traditional habits like rounds or keeping pace with others.
Against this backdrop, the research from the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD) explores how and why people are choosing to drink more moderately, from staying in control and avoiding next-day impacts, to making more self-directed choices that aren’t influenced by social pressure.
Aston spoke to Julian Braithwaite, CEO of the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD).
