Behind the scenes of a Great British model train institution

For many it may have been a cherished hobby that consumed hours of their childhood, but for dedicated collectors, the world of model trains, planes and cars still holds a fascinating amount of fixation.

Around the country there are dedicated enthusiasts that spend hundreds of hours building perfect replicas of towns, villages and landscapes for their locos to travel through and nothing, but perfect authenticity will do in their model world.

The second series of the popular TV show Hornby: A Model World, takes viewers behind the scenes at Hornby – Britain’s best loved model making company, to reveal how they shrink mighty trains, planes and automobiles to create a new generation of miniature masterpieces.

From century old steam engines to cutting edge racing cars – each episode will follow the process from drawing board to perfect mini replica, with visits to see the real giants along the way and follow the ups and downs of the design process.

Aston spoke to Simon Kohler, development and marketing director at Hornby and Montana Hoeren, head of brand at Hornby.
