Caregivers struggling with mental health
Caregivers across the UK are trapped in a relentless cycle of physical pain and emotional exhaustion. From supporting children with disabilities to caring for ageing parents, millions are stretched to breaking point. Yet their struggles remain invisible to most of us.
1in 5 caregivers (20%) suffers daily physical pain. Tasks like lifting, assisting with mobility, and long hours of caregiving are causing chronic back pain, joint damage, and muscle strain. Another 9% endure physical discomfort 4 to 6 days a week, their bodies worn down by unrelenting caregiving responsibilities. For caregivers dedicating over 20 hours a week to their role – a commitment made by 38% of respondents – the physical toll is unavoidable, according to the report from GOPO Joint Health.
The mental strain is equally staggering. 37% have had to take time off work because the demands of caregiving left them physically and emotionally drained.. Many grapple with exhaustion, isolation, and overwhelming guilt as they prioritise others’ needs over their own. 24% say they have no time or energy to practise even basic self-care, and only 33% manage to exercise or take rest breaks to cope with the demands of caregiving. The emotional weight of caregiving is grinding down those who prop up our most vulnerable populations.
