Celebrate British Egg Week

9th October 2020
Posted by Aston Avery

Running from October 6th – 12th, British Egg Week is all about celebrating one of the healthiest foods out there.

Eggs can be enjoyed cooked, raw, or powdered, and boost any meal as a cost effective, high quality protein source packed with vitamins and minerals. Thanks to their whites, eggs are one of the best protein sources for building and maintaining lean muscle; they contain all nine essential amino acids and have zero fat.

The health benefits that eggs provide, combined with the growing trend away from consuming meat, has seen them in huge demand in the UK.5 We consume them at a staggering rate of 36 million eggs per day – that’s 13.1 billion a year. As well as providing health benefits, the poultry industry is a massive boost to the economy too. Worth just over £1 Billion 2019 and we exported 271 million eggs. In the UK free range is now the most popular egg which shows a real move by consumers to take animal welfare seriously.

In the past, eggs have been subject to some harsh criticism. Whilst it used to be thought that eggs boosted bad cholesterol, this has luckily now been largely dispelled. This is because eggs contain relatively little saturated fat, the fat that causes cholesterol production. With those rumors quashed, the popularity of eggs has continued to skyrocket, along with the versatility of how they can be purchased.

Aston spoke to Ray Birlis, director at Eazy Egg to tell us the best ways to enjoy eggs and maximize their health benefits.
