Chef Gizzi Erskine on comfort foods

Cheese on toast is one of Britain’s most beloved comfort foods, with four fifths (85%) regularly enjoying it, eating it on average four times a month.

To coincide with National Cheese on Toast Day, Lea and Perrins have revealed new research that shows three in five (59%) of us say it’s one of our favourite quick meals, and seven in ten (72%) agree it always hits the spot when we need comfort food.

But new research from Kraft Heinz Company suggests we’ve been doing it wrong for decades. Despite 41% of people agreeing cheese on toast is best enjoyed with Worcestershire Sauce, over a third (34%) are putting it on top of the cheese, where it simply slides off – rather than under it, on the toast, where it caramelises and soaks in.
