Clocks going back brings social jet lag
While many look forward to the extra hour in bed as the clocks change this weekend, the darker days can harm more than just our mood.
‘Social jet lag’ – a misalignment with our body’s internal clock, the circadian rhythm – caused by the hour shift, can have an unexpected impact on our health.
Beyond feeling lethargic, research suggests ‘social jet lag’ could increase the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome (the combination of high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, abdominal fat and high blood pressure) and even depression.
Aston spoke to Dr Joshua Wolrich, NHS doctor, author and nutrition expert.
