Comedian Katy Brand on loving our locals

With the pandemic giving many a new perspective on what is most important in life, Brits are hungry for different ways to give back this festive season.

One of the ways seems to be through their appetites – for instance, two fifths (42%) of people polled in a new survey say they are more inclined to support local restaurants now than they were before the pandemic.

The top reason behind this was specifically to give back to their local community over big chains (35%) and a preference to be served locally sourced ingredients (25%).

The new research from OpenTable found behaviour hasn’t just shifted when it comes to restaurant choice since the pandemic. More generally, almost a fifth (17%) of people say they give more to charitable causes now than they did 18 months ago, which is very fitting as the restaurant reservation service has teamed up with Mastercard to launch Dine Local 2021 and support FareShare, the UK’s biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste.
